I am in charge of teaching Medical Computer Science at the
University Medical Center
Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and set up the system management of the now
'Department of
Computational Neuroscience' (ICNS) facilities (since 1981 then IMDM, later IMI). My main interests
are eLearning, Virtual Patients, image processing, 3D-stereo vision and computer
graphics of 3D and 4D data. I contributed the Linux prototype, the Linux user
interface and the Windows 3D-Navigator to the VOXEL-MAN
atlasses. I also helped a little bit to segment and visualize the
Visibel Korean Human: Virtual Preparation and Atlas Building of Brain and Heart of the Visible
Korean Human.
VOXEL-MAN is still being developed as a haptic training tool, but also already a museum piece.
Since 2006 I have been more involved with general
eLearning helping to set up the eLearning system Mephisto/UKE
at the University Medical
Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
A 5 minute clip by "whatchado.com" (in German) tries to summarize my professional motivation and career.
In 2015 I gave a public lecture on Digital Developments in Medicine (in German) at the University of Hamburg within a series of lectures on our "digital society".
With a Dipl.Ing. of an FH it is difficult to aquire any further
academic honors (at least in Germany) so in most publications until 2005 I restricted myself to being co-author. In that capacity I was
among the authors (together with other members
and some ex-members)
receiving an
"Honorable Mention" in 1986
and a
"Certificat of Merit" in 1992 for
scientific exhibits and a
"Cum Laude" in 1996
for an infoRAD exhibit at meetings of the Radiological
Society of North America (RSNA
), an
"Magna Cum Laude" in 1997 at the
meeting of the European Congress of
Radiology (ECR), an
"Anerkennungspreis" in
1987 for a paper presented at the
DAGM (German Society for
Pattern Recognition), the
"Video Award" of
the "Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft" (German
Radiological Society) in 1995 for a video created by using
VOXEL-MAN,
"VSJ SGJ Award for Excellent Visualized Image"
of The Visualization
Society of Japan 2003,
the "BVM
2nd Poster Award"
of the BVM 2005 and
became "Teacher of the Year 2011"
for my eLearning contributions at the University
Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and also "Teacher of the Year" for general teaching in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
I have been nominated by my students and received the "Hamburger Lehrpreis 2017" for the medical faculty of Hamburg University.
Apart from my family life (very old link with correct numbers: 1 wife, 3 children) -
I'm quite involved in activities at our local church at home: youth work, confirmation class teacher (for 12 years), now member of the Sunday School team, elected member of the church council (since Jan. 1974), synode of the Deanery of Hamburg-West/Süd-Holstein and deputy deanery executive. I also was chair and member of the parents council (SEB) of the Carl-Eitz-Schule (1996-2004) where my kids (and I) went for their first 4 years at school. 2003-2013 I've been member and since Sept. 2005 chair of the executive of the parents council (SEB) of the Theodor-Heuss-Schule where my kids (and I) went and have been chair of the KEB-Gymnasien (district of Pinneberg, Grammar-Schools, parents council) 2008-2012.
I'm also a member of the Othona Community, Bradwell on Sea, Essex, England which takes up quite a part of my life - especially on Sunday nights on the Virtual Stoep (see Announcement) and in my holidays.
